Two flops hit the felt.
Eleven at night, somebody says the words, and nobody gets to fold before the flop. You look down at a king-high flush on the top board and top two pair on the bottom. Four players are still in, the pot is already three buy-ins, and the man on your left has just bet it. It looks like the best hand you have held all night. It is a fold, and the rest of this site is about why.
We have sat in that seat. The table does not wait while you work it out, so here is the short version:
- Two boards, one number. Your share of the pot is the average of the two boards. Nothing on one board halves everything on the other.
- Two pair is grey. So is a flush without the ace. Facing a bet, a pretty hand that is not the nuts is a fold, whatever the price looks like.
- Nobody bet? Bet. A strong board makes the first bet from any seat, blinds included. The first bet earns because it is first.
